꿈나무의 등장은 항상 관중들을 설레게 한다.
당구입문 5개월차, 올해 12살 동호인이 처음으로 전국대회에 출전, 첫 경기를 승리로 장식해 현장 갤러리들의 이목이 쏠렸다. 주인공은 유태승(안동 길주초5) 군.
18일 낮, ‘2024 안동하회탈배 전국 3쿠션 당구대회’ 관중석의 수많은 눈이 일제히 한 테이블로 향했다.
그 시선이 꽂힌 곳은 메인이벤트 격인 조명우-차명종 간 선수부 8강전 테이블이 아니었다. ‘귀여운 소년’ 유태승 군이 삼촌뻘 선수와 치열한 접전을 벌이던 동호인부 D조 1차전 경기 테이블이었다.
유 군의 경기가 마지막 30이닝째(동호인부 30이닝제한)로 돌입하자 관중석은 술렁거렸다. 스코어는 3:3 동점상황. 저득점 경기였다. 화려함과는 거리가 먼 이 경기의 결과를 관중들은 손에 땀을 쥐고 기다리는 눈치였다.
이런 분위기 속에 돌입한 마지막 30이닝서 공격권자는 유 군. 덤덤한 얼굴로 큐를 들고 어드레스에 돌입한 그는 이내 되돌려치기로 공격, 득점에 성공하며 짜릿한 1점차(4:3) 승리를 쟁취했다.
‘소년 선수’가 승리하자 관중석에선 큰 환호와 우레와 같은 박수가 터져 나왔다. 갤러리들과 섞여 제자의 승리를 목격한 스승 서승훈(경남당구연맹) 선수는 한달음에 제자인 유 군에게로 달려와 기쁨을 함께했다.
그 직후 ‘전국대회 첫승’ 소감을 묻는 기자에게 유 군은 “이 대회가 전국대회였어요?”라며 ‘토끼 눈’을 뜨고 오히려 되묻는다. 그리고는 더욱 밝아진 표정으로 “기뻐요”라며 씩씩하게 소감을 전한다.
유 군의 기쁨은 승리뿐만이 아니다. ‘우상’인 조명우 선수와 대회장에서 만나 함께 기념촬영에 성공하며 “소원을 이뤘다”고 했다. 다소 상기된 얼굴과 승리 소감을 전할 때보다 더 커진 데시벨로 전한 소원성취 소감이었다.
유 군은 5개월 전 당구를 처음 접했다. 아버지와 함께 현 스승인 서승훈 선수가 운영하는 당구장(안동시 정하동 리코당구클럽)에 가 당구의 재미를 알게 됐고, 이후 레슨을 받으며 ‘선수의 꿈’을 무럭무럭 키워가는 중이다.
스승은 제자의 당구사랑이 대단하다고 칭찬한다. “방과 후 매일 6시간씩 당구장에서 큐를 들고 집중하는 데, 어른인 제가 봐도 참 대단하다”는 것. 선생님의 칭찬에 유 군은 꾸벅 인사하며 감사함을 전했다.
이어 사진촬영을 요청받은 유 군은 “네!‘라며 씩씩한 대답과 함께 카메라를 향해 유쾌발랄한 포즈와 표정을 취해줬다. 스승과의 촬영 때는 눈을 부릅떴다. 항상 눈이 감긴 사진만 남아 이번엔 일부러 눈을 크게 떴다고.
이내 선생님은 제자의 부모님으로부터 전화를 받아 승전보를 알렸다. 그사이 촬영을 마친 유 군은 제 몸의 절반 이상 크기인 큐가방을 짊어지더니, 위풍당당한 승자의 걸음걸이로 지인들 품으로 향했다.
한편, 유 군은 대회 2차전에서는 아쉽게 8:9로 1점차로 패했다.
