비롤 위마즈(웰뱅피닉스)가 ‘노병찬 돌풍’을 잠재우고 결승에 진출, 개인통산 2번째 PBA투어 우승에 도전한다.
위마즈는 15일 오후 1시 고양 킨텍스 PBA전용구장에서 시작된 23/24시즌 6차 ‘NH농협카드 PBA챔피언십’ 4강 1경기에서 이번대회 ‘언더독’ 돌풍의 주인공 노병찬을 세트스코어 4:2로 꺾었다.
노병찬에게 하이런9점(3이닝)을 허용하며 1세트를 2점차(13:15)로 내준 위마즈는 이어진 2~4세트를 15:5, 15:10, 15:10으로 내리 따냈다.
세트스코어 상으로는 위마즈가 3:1로 우세였지만, 10점차로 이긴 2세트(15:5)를 빼면 3~4세트 모두 거세게 추격해 온 노병찬을 저지하고 따낸 신승에 가까웠다.
다만, 위마즈는 특유의 힘이 실린 샷이 고비마다 적중했고, 또 간간이 터진 럭키샷 2방(3세트 5이닝 등)등이 더해져 세트스코어 3:1로 달아나는 데 성공했다.
이 가운데, 노병찬은 추격의 고삐를 당겨야 할 순간에 큐미스 등으로 위마즈에게 공격권을 내준 점 등이 아쉬움으로 남은 2~4세트였다.
그러나 이어진 5세트는 심기일전한 노병찬이 가져갔다. 초장(1이닝)에 터진 경기 2번째 하이런9점 등으로 위마즈에게 3점차(15:12)로 세트를 따낸 것.
그렇게 위마즈의 세트스코어 3:2 우세로 6세트가 시작됐다.
치열한 접전이 예상됐으나, 의외로 승리의 기운이 초반부터 위마즈 쪽으로 흘렀다. 2-3-1점(1~3이닝)과 4득점(5이닝)을 터뜨린 위마즈는 이어, 3득점(9이닝)을 치며 9이닝째에 무려 11점(13:2)차로 앞서나갔다.
이어진 6세트 10이닝째 공격에서 위마즈는 승리까지 남은 2점을 침착하게 채우며 4강전 승리를 확정지었다.
이로써 결승에 오른 위마즈는 22/23시즌 3차투어 이후 1년 2개월만에 통산 2번째 우승을 노리게 됐다.
위마즈의 가장 최근 결승진출은 올시즌 2차 투어로, 당시 프레드릭 쿠드롱(전 웰뱅피닉스)에게 4:1로 패했다.
한편, 강민구(16강) 김재근(8강) 등 강자를 연파하며 이번 투어 내내 거세게 불어닥쳤던 ‘노병찬 돌풍’은 4강에서 마감됐다.
위마즈는 15일 오후 4시부터 시작되는 최성원(휴온스)-최원준 간의 4강 2경기 승자와 시즌 6차 우승컵을 놓고 격돌한다. 대망의 결승전은 밤 9시30분 돌입한다.
