지난해 초클루에 이어, 올해도 튀르키예 친한파(親韓派) 선수가 PBA로 둥지를 옮겼다. 올해로 한국 살이 3년차인 얄신 오즈칼(Yalçın Özkal)이다.
얄신(46)은 5년 전 한국여성 J씨와 결혼, 경기도 동탄에 가정을 꾸려 한국 땅에서 선수 커리어를 이어왔다. 지난해에는 인천당구연맹 정식 선수가 돼 두 차례나 연맹 대회에 출전한 바 있다.
이런 그가 올해 프로선수로서 첫 발을 내딛는다. 최근 PBA 우선등록선수로 합격, 다가올 2024-25시즌에 드림투어(2부) 선수로 뛰게 된 것.
36년의 개인 당구사에서 어쩌면 큰 변곡점이 될 선택을 한 그에게 해당 선택에 대한 소감을 직접 들어봤다.
“PBA를 선택한 이유는 한국”이라고 밝힌 얄신은 인터뷰에서 자신의 얘기와 더불어 튀르키예 캐롬당구의 실상도 들려줬다.
▲PBA행을 택한 이유와 소감은.
=내가 PBA를 선택한 이유는 한국에 있다. 나는 한국에 살고 있고, 튀르키예 친구들 중 많은 이들이 이곳(한국)에서 당구 생활을 이어가고 있기 때문이다. 게다가 나는 한국인을 매우 좋아해 거의 모든 친구들이 한국인이다.
수많은 마스터 플레이어가 뛰고 있는 PBA는 그 톱 플레이어들조차 우승을 장담 못하는 곳이다. 그런 곳에서 뛰게 돼 설렌다.
▲한국 살이 3년 차라고.
=그렇다. 5년 전 한국인 아내와 결혼해 경기도 동탄에 살림을 차려 3년 째 거주하고 있다. (얄신은 아내에 관한 자세한 신상공개를 꺼려했다. 한편 얄신은 서울월드컵에 출전하거나, 대한당구연맹 주최 전국대회 및 PBA 경기 등을 관람한 사진을 자신의 페이스북에 수시로 게시해왔다.)
▲아내와 어디서 어떻게 만났나.
=휴가 차 들른 독일에서 아내를 처음 만났다. 이어 인연을 이어가 결혼한 끝에 아내의 나라인 한국에서 함께 살기로 결정했다. 부모님 모두 하늘로 떠나보낸 나는 튀르키예에 함께할 가족이 없었다. 그런 연유로 이곳(한국)에서 살게 됐고 그 결정이 나는 매우 만족스럽다. 나는 이곳을 참 좋아하기 때문이다. (아내도 당구 관련 종사자인가?) 전혀. 아내는 당구와 아무 관계 없는 사람이다.
▲당신의 거주지인 동탄에서 아카데미를 운영중인 강동궁-차명종과 친하다고.
=가끔 그들의 학원(강차 당구연구소 아카데미)에 가 함께 훈련하곤 한다. 내 집에서 2km 내 가까운 거리에 아카데미가 위치해 있다.
(차명종에 따르면 얄신은 월 2~3회 아카데미에 방문해 연습하고 한국선수들과 어울리며 친분을 쌓았고, 그 인연으로 지난해 인천당구연맹 선수로 정식 등록하기도 했다고)
▲당구선수 외 당구계 활동은.
=나는 한국 당구용품업체 빌킹코리아의 선수이자 ‘아우라’ 브랜드의 유통업자이기도 하다. 이 브랜드의 장비들을 고국인 튀르키예 당구시장에 공급하고 있다.
▲튀르키예의 여러 당구선수들이 당신처럼 겸업 중인가.
=그런 편이다. 튀르키예에서 당구는 수익이 없다(큰 돈을 벌지 못한다). 또한 당구선수에게 대회 참가 등 후원을 해주는 기업이나 개인이 없다. 그래서 동료 선수들 가운데 부업을 갖고 있는 이들이 많다.
▲튀르키예의 캐롬당구 선수층이 궁금하다.
=전문선수가 20~30여명에 불과하다. 그중에서 PBA에 올 수 있는 선수는 4~5명 남짓이다. 대부분 결혼해 아이도 낳아 해외진출에 큰 관심이 없다. 물론 PBA처럼 큰 무대에서 뛰고 싶은 마음들은 다 갖고 있다.
▲언제 당구를 시작했나. 당신은 튀르키예 선수들 중에서도 베테랑인데.
=1988년, 튀르키예의 작은 도시에서 당구를 접했다.(이와 별개로 얄신은 자신이 튀르키예의 대도시 이스탄불 출신이라고 밝혔다.) 본격적으로 대회에 참가한 것은 1990년도 부터다.
당구 선생님은 보라 카라타이(Bora karatay,84세)라는 분이다. 나를 비롯해 수많은 젊은이들에게 당구를 선물해준 인물이다.
(보라 카라타이는 튀르키예에 3쿠션을 들여온 이로, 튀르키예 캐롬당구의 대부로 통한다고 한다. 최근 .PBA행으로 화제를 모은 ‘튀르키예 18세 신성’ 부락 하스하스도 카라타이에게 당구를 배웠다고.)
▲현재 훈련장은.
=용인시 수지의 123당구클럽, 동탄의 캐롬83 클럽에서 훈련중이다. 두 곳에서 하루 평균 5~6시간 이상 공을 친다.
▲연습하며 곧 뛰게 될 드림투어에서의 활약도 상상해볼텐데.
=물론 우승이 욕심나지만, 결과는 시간이 지나봐야 알 수 있을 것이다. 우선 다가올 시즌에는 좋은 성적을 내 1부투어에서 뛰는 것이 목표다.
▲PBA서 꼭 맞붙고 싶은 상대는.
=한 명을 꼽을 수 없다. (굳이)예를 들면, 튀르키예의 자존심이자 세계 최고의 선수라고 할 수 있는 세미 사이그너와 대결해보고 싶다. 사실 PBA는 시즌이 거듭될수록 (좋은 성적을 거두기)어려워지고 있다. 그 안에서 뛰는 선수들의 자질은 두말할 나위 없이 대단하다. (PBA 선수로서)그들과 맞붙어 보고 싶다.
