광저우국제당구박람회(GBE 2024) 참관기 완결편
십수년 간 ‘광저우국제당구박람회’(GBE)를 취재해 온 결과, 박람회는 2일차에 거의 모든 일정이 끝난다. 마지막 날인 3일차에는 오전에만 부스가 운영되고, 미처 팔지 못한 남은 전시품목을 덤핑처리하거나 거래처에 넘기는 일정으로 진행되기에 막날 일반 관람객은 거의 없다.
따라서 ‘GBE’는 2일차 때가 피크다. 이번 박람회 피크날(2일차)은 토요일이라서 아침부터 전시장 부근은 교통정체가 대단했다. 중국의 대도시는 상주인구만큼의 유동인구가 활동하기에 늘 복잡하다.
그 복잡한 교통상황을 뚫고 어렵사리 도착한 박람회장은 전날보다 더 많은 관람객으로 인산인해를 이뤘다. 역시나, 이번 박람회에서는 역대 최고의 흥행기록이 쓰여졌다.
이 가운데 대형업체들은 유명 당구선수들이나 미녀 모델들을 앞세워 홍보 판매에 열을 올렸다. 그 열기는 오후 늦게까지 식을 줄 몰랐다.
부스 운영 업체들은 대게 1일차에 거의 모든 상담을 마친다. 이어 2일차에는 다른 업체들의 부스를 돌아보며 최근 트랜드를 파악하고 정보를 수집하기도 한다.
필자도 정보 수집에 나서며 올해 ‘GBE’의 흐름을 읽어봤다. 즉각적으로 떠오르는 단어는 단연 헤이볼이다. 쉽게, 거의 모든 부스가 ‘헤이볼 마케팅’을 펼쳤다고 보면 된다.
여기서 시선을 영국의 매치룸스포츠로 돌려본다. 연간 상금총액 400억에 육박하는 초대형 규모의 ‘스누커프로리그’를 운영하는 마케팅업체인데, 이곳이 포켓볼의 프로화를 선언하며 작업을 착착 진행중이다.
이 매치룸스포츠가 야심차게 기획한 포켓볼 투어가 ‘월드나인볼투어(WNT)’다. 매치룸스포츠 측은 이 WNT를 들고 그간 글로벌 포켓볼계에서 기득권으로 맞섰던 WPA(세계포켓볼협회)의 아성을 무너뜨렸다. 그 결과, 포켓볼을 즐기는 전세계 국가에서 WNT의 잠재력을 어렵게 않게 확인할 수 있게 된 최근이다.
그러나 그 판도에서 중국의 헤이볼이 강력한 맞수로 급부상한다.
헤이볼은 축소된 스누커 테이블 위에서, 포켓볼 공으로, 포켓볼 방식(8볼)에 따르는 경기다. 즉, 포켓볼과 직간접적인 연관이 있는 종목이다. 또한 중국에서 고안돼 널리 사랑받는 당구 종목이기도 하다.
이에 중국 정부는 ”헤이볼의 국제화“를 모토로 종목을 지구촌 곳곳에 열심히 전파 중이다. 오는 ‘2030년 카타르아시안게임’에 헤이볼의 채택이 확실해 보이는 상황을 연출하는 데까지 성공했다.
국제당구계, 헤이볼-포켓볼 전쟁중
캐롬중심 韓 업체들, 틈새시장 공략
이런 배경에 의해, 글로벌 당구계에서는 헤이볼과 포켓볼의 전쟁이 시작되었다. 국제 당구용품 시장 역시 그 영향권에서 벗어날 순 없었다. 중국판만 들여다보면, 스누커-포켓볼-헤이볼로 3등분 돼 있던 중국(당구산업)시장이 헤이볼로 집약된 모습이다. 이번 ‘GBE 2024’에서도 그 분위기를 제대로 느낄 수 있었다.
이 거대한 흐름에서, 3쿠션 중심의 캐롬 성행 국가인 한국의 용품업체들은 캐롬 중심의 용품들로 틈새시장을 노린다. 포켓볼-헤이볼-스누커 모두 개인용품은 대동소이한 가운데, 우리 업체들은 한류를 앞세운 개인용품의 고급화를 내세우는 전략을 택했다.
그 전략이 이번 ‘GBE 2024’서 먹혀, 우리 업체들의 부스가 호평속에 꽤 많은 관람객을 유치하는 데 성공했다.
‘광저우박람회 개근업체’ 볼텍코리아(대표 유병립)는 첫날 대부분의 전시용품이 매진됐기에, 둘쨋날에는 굵직한 거래처에 샘플을 나눠주고 추후 주문을 받기 위한 작업을 했다.
올해 처음으로 부스를 개설한 KNB(대표 안진환) 측은 ”많은 것을 보고 배우며 미래 사업의 방향을 설계하기 위한 토대를 마련했다“고 자평한다.
십수년 간 행사 ‘참관자’였던 대전큐맨(대표 조영만)은 이번엔 ‘판매자’로 변신을 시도했다, 결과는 성공적이었다. 전시품 중 큐맨기계와 드릴척(대표 신길호)의 현장시연이 관람객들의 최고인기를 끌며 완판된 것.
‘국제 당구공 산업계 강자’인 코스모스 측은 헤이볼의 유행과 WNT의 열풍에 힘입어, 자사의 ‘다이아몬드공’ 생산량 확대방안을 검토 중이다.
한편, 국내 당구계 일각에서는 글로벌시장에서 헤이볼과 포켓볼에 밀리는 캐롬종목 중심의 한국업체들을 향해 분발을 요하는 목소리가 나오고 있다.
이와 관련, 십수년 동안 당구박람회 참관단을 구성한 단장으로서 한국업체들을 이끌어온 이병규 빌플렉스 대표는 “내년부터 광저우박람회에 한국업체들을 규합한 ‘한국관’을 개설, 국제적으로 경쟁력을 갖춘 전진기지 역할을 하도록 중지를 모으겠다”는 계획을 밝혔다.
현재 당구판에선 ‘총성없는 산업전쟁’이 벌어지고 있다. 이 판에서 한국이 생존하고, 나아가 세계3쿠션의 중심국가 역할을 하려면 용품업계의 노력만으론 역부족이다. KBF, PBA, 당구기업 등이 머리를 맞대고 연구해 전세계에 ‘당구한류’ 보급을 위한 합공을 펼쳐야 할 것이다.
이 생각이 비단 필자만의 주장이 아니라는 점을 이번 광저우국제당구박람회에서 여러 당구계 종사자들을 만나며 확인할 수 있었다.
우리 참관단 일행은 13일 낮 12시 30분 대한항공 KE866편으로 한국으로 돌아간다.
내년 광저우당구박람회는 과연 어떤 모습으로 다가올 지 궁금하다. 광저우에서의 마지막 밤은 깊어가는데, 우리 일행은 짐을 꾸리기 바쁜 시간이다(끝).
