잡탕당구 이완수의 포켓볼프리즘 제11화
요즘 당구계 국제정세에 관심 있는 이들에게 중국식 당구인 ‘헤이볼’(차이니즈에잇볼)은 이제 낯설지 않은 존재가 됐다.
헤이볼은 중국의 어마어마한 시장·자본과 함께한다. 자국의 막대한 자본력을 등에 업고, 든든한 내수시장을 발판삼아, 정부의 서포팅까지 받아가며 잘 포장돼 글로벌 당구계에 스며들고 있는 당구종목이다.
이를 1년에 한 번씩 만천하에 대고 외치는 대회가 있으니, 바로 CBSA(중국당구연맹) 주최 ‘월드헤이볼마스터즈 그랜드파이널’(헤이볼마스터즈)이다. 그 12번째 장이 얼마 전 막을 내렸다.
이번 ‘2024 헤이볼마스터즈’는 우승상금만 70만불(한화 약 9억4000만원)에 달했다. 당구대회 역사를 통틀어봐도 손에 꼽힐만한 이 거액을 손에 쥔 이는 중국의 주빙제였다.
이에 필자는 주빙제를 대면했던 지난 2010년대 초의 기억을 되짚어 봤다. CBSA 주최 ‘차이나오픈’(국제포켓볼대회)서 마주한 그는 13년 전인 그때도 포켓볼과 헤이볼을 병행하던 선수였다.
주빙제 뿐만 아니었다. 대다수의 중국 선수들은 당시에도 포켓볼대회와 헤이볼대회를 교차 출전하고 있었다. 범주를 1천만명에 육박한다는 중국 당구인 전체로 늘려도 상황은 비슷했다. 그 당시에도 중국인들은 포켓볼·스누커와 함께 헤이볼을 열심히 즐기고 있었다.
이런 배경에서 ‘헤이볼마스터즈’가 탄생했다. 그리고 올해, CBSA는 그 12번째 대회(2024 헤이볼 그랜드 마스터즈)를 영리하게 치러냈다. 외국선수와 중국선수를 분리해 예선전을 치러냈다. 대회 흥행요소인 중국선수 16인을 본선(32강)에 무조건 올려놓기 위한 수였다.
주최측의 강한 푸쉬를 받은 중국 선수들은 무려 11명이나 16강에 올라 개최국의 자존심을 지켜냈다. 작년도 준우승자이자 유일한 여성선수인 탕춘샤오도 그 11인에 껴 이목을 집중시켰다. 이어 영국 스누커선수 출신 3명, 미얀마 선수 1명, 필리핀 포켓볼 선수(데니스 오꼴로) 1명이 16강에 올랐다.
치열한 승부 끝, 결승전에 오른 두 선수는 중국인이었다. 승자조에서 올라온 자오루리앙과 패자조를 헤쳐나온 주빙제였다.
중국 공영방송인 CCTV5에서 라이브중계로 진행된 결승전은 치열한 접전 끝에 주빙제가 자오루리앙을 21대 15로 따돌리고 우승컵을 들어 올렸다.
이로서 전세계 당구종목의 이목과 관심을 집중적으로 받으며 개최된 ‘2024 월드헤이볼마스터즈 그랜드파이널’이 화려한 피날레를 맞았다.
폭죽과 환호로 뒤덮였던 그 대회를 통해 중국의 야망을 재차 읽을 수 있었다. 자신들의 헤이볼을 ‘2030년 카타르 도하 아시안게임’ 입성을 시작으로, 올림픽 종목까지 입성시키겠다는 확고한 의지 말이다.
그와 별개로 헤이볼이란 종목 자체가 세계 당국계에 어떤 여파를 몰고 올지 궁금하기도 하다. 관련한 의문점도 많다. 다만, 중국 공산당과 조이빌리아드 등 기업의 전폭적인 지원 덕분에 헤이볼의 미래가 밝은 것만은 분명해 보인다.
