고려대학교와 연세대학교(가나다 순) 간의 정기전. ‘고연전’(연고전)이 매우 생소한 한국인은 얼마 없을 것이다. 기원을 찾아 올라가면 일제강점기 때가 나올 정도로 유서 깊은 행사다. 정기전에 참여하는 선수들은 물론 전국의 동문들이 엄청난 열기를 띠고 모교를 응원한다.
정기전 5대 종목인 축구 야구 농구 럭비 아이스하키 외에도 학내 단체 동아리 동문회 모임들도 각종 대회를 열어 양교간의 경쟁·교류를 이어가고 있다.
이 흐름에, 최근 생활체육으로 주목받는 당구 정기전도 지난 2018년부터 치러지고 있다.
고려대학교 교우회는 ‘호당회’(고려대 상징동물 호랑이의 ‘호’+당구회), 연세대학교 총동문회는 ‘YBC’(연세빌리어드클럽)로 각각 뭉쳐 모교를 대표해 대결한다.
그리고 호당회·YBC는 오는 18일 서울 여의도 CV당구클럽에서 열리는 제5회 당구 고연전(연고전)을 앞두고 있다. 4회까지 전적은 2승2패로 양측이 팽팽한 상태다. 5회 정기전이 더욱 기대되는 이유다.
이런 판의 기획자 중 하나인 ‘호당회’ 장영철 회장(66학번)을 최근 본지가 만나 당구 정기전과 호당회에 관해 들어봤다. 서울특별시체육회 상임부회장직을 거쳐 대한당구연맹 제8·9대 회장을 연임한 그는 재임기간 중 당구의 전국체전 정식종목 채택 등 업적을 이룬 바 있다. 다음은 장 회장과의 일문일답.
Q. 우선 당구 정기전에 관해 설명한다면.
=양교의 화합을 도모하기 위한 취지로 열리는 3쿠션 당구대회다. 그 5번째 정기전이 11월 18일 열리게 된다. 나는 20점으로 참가한다. (호당회-YBC 간의 정기전은 28~30점, 22~24점, 21점 이하, 시니어, 재학생부 등으로 나뉘어 치러진다.) 양측이 ‘2인1조 단식-단식-복식’ 대결한 총전적을 합해 최종승자를 가린다. 작년 4회까지 총전적은 2승2패다.
Q. 호당회와 YBC의 전력을 비교한다면.
=연대는 고점자가 많다. 대회 나오는 선수들이 대게 대대점수 20점 이상이다. 다만, 전체 숫자는 우리 고대가 더 많다. 하하. 우린 예선전을 거쳐 정기전 참가선수를 선발하는데, 연대는 거의 총출전한다. 고대가 그 숫자에 맞춘다.
우리 호당회에는 최근 95년 이후 학번들이 약 30명 들어왔는데, 그들 모두 20점 이상 친다. 연대와의 정기전에서도 그들이 맹활약한다.
Q. 고려대 교우회 당구모임 ‘호당회’는 어떻게 발족됐나.
=제가 대한당구연맹 회장(8·9대) 직을 내려놓은 뒤 동문들과 당구로 모임을 하고자 의기투합해 만들어진 동호회다. 지난 2018년 연세대와 정기전을 기점으로 정식 창설됐다.
고려대 교우회 체육회 (정식가맹)종목은 19개다. 5개 종목(축구 야구 농구 럭비 아이스하키)을 제외하면 모두 동호회가 중심이다. 현재 호당회도 고려대학교 교우회 체육회에 정식 가맹된 상태다.
Q. 호당회 회원은.
=현재 등록된 회원은 250명, 그중 150명이 실 활동중이다. (가입조건은?) 고려대 출신이면 누구나 가입할 수 있다. 임원진은 회장(장영철 회장) 부회장, 사무총장, 사무차장, 사무국장 순으로 구성됐다.
Q. 호당회가 참가 또는 주최하는 대회는.
=크게 4개다. 고려대 교우회장배(개인전), 교우체육회장배 학번벌 대항(개인·복식), 호당회 회장배(개인전), 그리고 연세대와의 정기전이다.
Q. 고려대 재학생 대상 대회를 치렀다고.
=“후배들아 당구로 맘껏 놀라”는 취지로 올해 5월 개교기념일(5월 5일)을 기념해 재학생 대상 당구대회를 열었다. 3쿠션과 4구, 포켓볼 등 다양한 종목을 마련해 치러냈다.
Q. 호당회 운영에 있어 애로사항은 없나.
=동호회니, 비용이 들어간다. 지금껏 우리 자비로 다 꾸려왔다. 동문회 지원금만으론 운영이 힘들다. 선수들에게 참가비(3만원)를 받고 있고, 또 동문들 중 사제 출연도 꽤 된다. 감사하게도.
Q. 연간 치러지는 4개 대회 외에 또다른 대회도 구상중이라고.
=그렇다. 비수도권 동문들을 위한 대회를 기획 중이며, 현재 거의 성사직전 단계다. 올 겨울 개최를 목표로 하고 있다. 전국 광역시도별 17개 팀이 겨루는 대회로 치러질 것이다.
Q. 마지막으로 동문들에게 전하고픈 말이 있다면.
=50대까지만 해도 고대 출신들의 주 스포츠모임은 테니스가 대세였다. 지금은 바둑과 당구가 주종목이 돼가고 있다. 그중 당구는 가성비가 좋은 스포츠다. 신체에 가해지는 무리도 적고 두뇌를 쓰는 운동이 바로 당구다. 우리 고대 많은 동문들이 이런 스포츠를 즐겼으면 하는 바람이다. 누구든 환영한다. 하하.
