옆 테이블에선 루벤 레가즈피가 ‘베트남 1번’ 쩐을 40:38, 2점차로 겨우 꺾는다. 결국 승부는 승부치기(스카치 방식)서 갈리게 됐다.
베트남은 승부치기 5이닝까지 11:5로 앞서나갔다. 그러나 스페인이 분발, 7이닝(11:11)에 이어 15이닝서도 스코어를 동점(14:14)으로 만든다.
양 팀 모두 금메달까지 단 1점만이 남은 상황. 이때 베트남이 15이닝째 공격찬스를 잡는다.
샷에 나선 선수는 ‘팀 막내’ 바오였다. 큰 호흡 후 그는 신중하게 샷을 날렸고, 수구가 제1목적구를 거쳐 제2목적구에 정확하게 도달했다. 베트남의 우승이 확정되는 순간이었다.
쩐 꾸엣 찌엔(세계2위, 40살)-바오 프엉 빈(8위 28살) ‘신구 듀오’는 고국에 사상 첫 ‘세계팀3쿠션선수권’ 금메달을 선사한 기쁨에 포효했고, 그들 손에선 금성홍기(베트남 국기)가 펄럭였다.
한편, 베트남은 대회 조별예선 A조를 1위로 통과해 8강에 올랐다.
A조는 최종전 후 3국이 1승2무(승점 8)로 동률이었다.
그러나 애버리지 우세로 베트남(1.726)이 1위, 스페인(1.537)은 2위에 올라 조2위까지 주어지는 8강행 티켓을 따냈다.

이어진 8강~4강~결승까지 베트남의 여정은 순탄치 않았다.
베트남은 8강 ‘전통의 강호’ 벨기에(에디 멕스-요제프 필리폼)부터, 4강 미국(휴고 파티노-레이몬 그르투), 스페인과의 결승까지 모두 승부치기까지 가는 접전 끝에 승리했다.
베트남처럼 사상 첫 대회 금메달을 노리던 스페인은 아쉽게 결승서 패하며, 대회 통산 은메달이 3개가 됐다. 동메달은 6개다.
대회 공동3위는 일본(우메다 류지-미야시타 타카오)과 미국이 각각 차지했다.
