전문선수 4년차, 대구의 ‘늦깎이 선수들’ 정영호(49)-정상훈(46) 팀이 ‘2024 안동하회탈배 전국 3쿠션 당구대회’(안동하회탈배) 첫날인 15일 복식전서 동메달을 따냈다.
정-정 팀은 비록 4강전서 패했지만, 이어질 시상식 생각에 입가에 웃음이 떠나질 않았다. 그로 그럴 것이, 이번 입상이 두 선수가 데뷔 이래 전국대회서 거둔 가장 좋은 성적이자 첫 상이었다.
시상식 후 메달을 어루만지던 정-정 듀오는 “메달뿐만 아니라, (상금수령용)계좌번호 적고, 심판이 봐주는 경기까지 전부 처음 경험해봤어요. 무척 행복하네요. 갑자기 당구가 더 좋아졌어요”라며 함박웃음을 지었다.
두 선수는 지난 2020년 초, 동호인으로서 처음 만났다. 정영호가 막 오픈한 클럽(대구 북구 서편동 헐리우드당구장)에 같은 구 주민이자 클럽(복편동 스페셜클럽) 업주인 정상훈이 방문해 한판 겨뤘던 것.
이후 서로 왕래하는 사이가 됐고 이듬해인 2021년 5월, 함께 선발전을 거쳐 대구당구연맹 선수로 등록한다. 당시 코로나19 여파로 모든 대회가 스톱돼 두 사람의 유일한 낙인 당구대회 출전이 불가해졌고, 이에 연맹 월례대회라도 나가고픈 마음에 내린 결정이었다.
이어 정-정 듀오는 아예 팀을 이뤄 전국대회 복식전에 출전키로 한다. 의기투합한 그들의 데뷔전은 작년 7월 ‘남원 전국당구선수권’이다. 아쉽게 2회전서 탈락했다.
이후 합 맞춰 나온 두 번째 대회가 바로 이번 ‘안동하회탈배’다. 대회 16강서 ‘남원대회’ 2회전 상대인 박중근-이장석(경기) 팀에 25:14로 승리하며 작년 패배를 설욕한다.
기세가 오른 정-정 듀오는 8강서 ‘입상권 전력’으로 분류되던 허정한-이종훈(경남) 팀을 30:12로 대파하며 4강에 진출, 오히려 자신들의 입상을 확정 지었다. 특히, 하이런16점을 몰아쳐 단 2이닝만에 17:0으로 브레이크타임을 돌입하던 순간이 해당 경기의 백미였다.
쾌조의 컨디션 덕분에 정-정 팀은 4강전도 자신 있었지만, 상대인 광주의 최완영-황의종 팀이 더 막강했다. 불과 9이닝만에 점수가 27:11로 벌어졌고, 결국 12이닝째에 11:30으로 최종 패배했다. 상대인 최-황 팀의 4강전 애버리지는 2.500에 달했다.
그럼에도 정영호-정상훈 팀은 활짝 웃었다. 처음 받아본 메달을 자신들의 가장 열렬한 응원군인 아내에게 보여줄 수 있어서였다.
정상훈의 아내는 ‘당구전설’ 이상천의 외동딸인 올리비아 리다. 4강진출이 확정될 당시 올리비아는 남편에게 ‘사랑해’ ‘화이팅’ 등 문자를 보내며 응원해줬다고 한다.
정영호 또한 아내에게 큰 자랑거리가 생겨 기뻤다. 느닷없던 당구장 오픈 선언, 늦깎이 선수데뷔 등으로 아내를 놀라게 했던 그가 이제 선수로서 당당히 ‘영롱한 결과물’(메달)을 보일 수 있게 돼 “행복할 따름” 이라고.
끝으로 두 사람은 각각 ‘KBF 디비전리그’ 소속팀, 클럽 손님들에게도 고마움을 전했다.
대구시 캐롬팀 ‘한일정밀주조’ 선수인 정상훈은 정재한 한일정밀주조 대표를 언급했다. “오늘(15일) 오전에도 대회장에 오셔서 응원해주신 정 대표님께 앞으로도 열심히 하는 모습으로 보답하겠다”고 했다
정영호는 코로나19로 파리 날리던 당구장을 그나마 복작거리게 해줬던 손님들이 그렇게 고맙단다. 그들의 현재 그의 당구장 단골들이라고.
이를 끝으로 전국대회 첫 메달을 딴 ‘늦깎이’ 당구선수들의 인터뷰는 종료됐다. 이제 두 선수는 찢어져 16일부터 개인전을 치르게 된다. 그들의 행복 가득한 기세가 개인전까지 이어질 수 있을까. 그 여부에, 안동시를 찾은 당구인들의 귀추가 주목된다.
